San Francisco will provide supportive housing for 75 veterans this fall and winter, city leaders announced Thursday, a day ahead of Veterans Day.

The 75 new homes for veterans include 30 units at the Crown Hotel at 528 Valencia St. and 45 new units at the Winton Hotel at 445 O’Farrell St., Mayor Ed Lee said at a news conference outside the Crown Hotel on Thursday.

“No one who has served our country should be homeless in our city and these 75 new units will bring us one step closer to eradicating this situation,” Lee said in a statement.

Over the past two years, The City has housed more than 700 homeless veterans. City officials estimate there are another 300 homeless veterans still in need of housing.

The new homes for veterans announced Thursday are part of larger supportive housing efforts in San Francisco. Both managed by the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, the Crown Hotel opened 50 new supportive housing units for civilian homeless residents on Oct. 27 and the Winton Hotel, opening this fall, included 59 such homes as well — all in addition to the units for veterans.

“By making important improvements to our system, prioritizing housing placements for highly vulnerable veterans, and with the continued support and commitment of all local and federal partners, I am confident that San Francisco can end chronic homelessness for veterans,” Jeff Kositsky, director of The City’s Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, said in a statement.
